"MERRY CHRISTMAS DAY!!"

Hello Everyone!!

I trust that everyone is enjoying the simple pleasures of post holiday festivities and a wonderful vacation week -- and -- on behalf of all of the teachers, I thank you, all, for your thoughtfullness and generosity!!!!

As you likely already know, the week prior to vacation was a whirlwind of celebratory activity!!

On Monday, Tammy and Amy, especially, spent a great deal of time in the kitchen, preparing potato latkes, which were then served, with applesauce -- (according to Amy, they are very tasty with sour cream, as well) -- Kelly was very busy making lots of cookies to distribute to all of our helping hands -- (thank you, to all of the teachers and students, for their hard work and happy faces) -- and -- later that afternoon, the children painted wooden dreidels!!!!

Tuesday morning, we took our little friends Christmas caroling, at "The Big School" -- accompanied by the Minuteman C & T HS Early Education and Care Students, as well -- they sang, rang their jingle bells and handed-out homemade snowflakes to staff members -- it was a grand experience -- everyone was joyfully exhausted upon our return to the CDC . . .

Watching the Polar Express, in their jammies, and being served hot chocolate, was the highlight of Wednesday, for Butterflies and Puppies, alike!!

Our amaryllis is now 24 inches tall, (two feet!!), and, thanks to John, (:)), we saw the plant beginning to flower, which, we were all hoping to experience, before heading off on Wednesday -- it appears that four flowers are forming, while another bud is shooting up, from below -- we watered the amaryllis, generously, to keep it healthy until our return.

Other activities, this week, included, adding artwork to our Jan Brett-themed board, reading oh so many wonderfully interactive holiday books, (that I lost count!!), filling-in seasonal coloring books, (focused on shapes), fashioning pipe cleaner/cheneille stem decorations and mixing green play dough with silver glitter, (great fine motor skill activities), riding wheeled vehicles, (great gross motor skill activity), painting trees with salt and water, (to look like snow and for texture), math activities, (to encourage practice in one-to-one correspondence), wrapping gifts for family and friends, cutting-out snowflakes, and much, much more!!

And, during meeting times, we discussed "giving" as the major component to the holiday season, and, shared ways that we can make positive differences in our world.

I wish you a blessed holiday season and a happy new year, filled with joy!!!!

"HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, CHARLOTTE!!"

Dear Friends,

Yes -- a belated "Happy Birthday!!" to our friend, Charlotte, who turned four years old on December 6th!!

The weather has been cold and windy, and, as a result, the children have enjoyed many wonderful activities, indoors, where we continue to work on seasonal and other decor -- Mrs. Dolham has lavished one of our classroom walls with colorful and laminated banners bearing the greeting "hello!!" in languages spoken all over the world!!

Miss Downing has read Polar Express, as well as, shown the "train ride", multiple times, to the delight of our little friends -- during Activity Time, they were encouraged to "ride" the Polar Express, utilizing a string of chairs and jingle bells -- on Wednesday, the 23rd, we will wear pajamas to school, and watch Polar Express while savoring "snowman stew" -- hot chocolate with marshmallows and candy canes -- MMMM . . .

We have been reading many, many books about both Christmas and Hanukkah, and, our Butterflies and Puppies have been, especially, drawn to "Dreamsnow", a beautifully embellished book by Eric Carle, and, "Mistletoe", a story, with music, about a candy-cane colored kitty-cat who teaches all that it is far better to give than it is to receive.

Liz, Kelly, Tammy and Sashi have been keeping the kids very active with a wide variety of movement-inpired games and songs, as well as with baking activities.

We continue to review our calendar, daily, discuss the weather, sing our "December" song, and focus on letter recognition and sounds.

Please know, as well, that, on Monday, the 21st, we will be making Potato Latkes, served with apple sauce, with Mrs. Goell, and, on Tuesday, the 22nd, we will be going Caroling over at the "Big School" -- we look forward to another splendid Holiday week!!

"SUPER STOP & SHOP!!"

Good Evening Friends and Family Members,

We always have fun at school, and yesterday was no exception . . . but today . . . Miss Downing drove the Butterflies, Puppies, Mrs. Dolham, Miss Amy and me to Stop & Shop, (or, as one of our young friends said . . . "Stoppin Shoppin!!"

Rhonda, the Florist, invited all of the children to "smell the flowers", more specifically, a Lilly, pointed out the festive balloons and supplied us with coloring sheets, candy canes and Hershey kisses -- Thank you, Rhonda!! :)

Next, we stopped at the Deli, and after each child pressed the button, took a number and handed said back, he or she was given a slice of cheese . . . then, we headed over to see the lobsters and a squid with cherry tomato eyes -- aagghh!! -- thank you, Mary?!

John took us around back to demonstrate how to package and grind meat -- (rather carnivorous . . . I eat veggies . . .) -- thank goodness -- no samples of Steak Tartare!!

Rhonda quizzed the kids on the names and colors of vegetables and fruits, and, gave each child a fresh, delicious Clementine, before leading us to the bakery for -- yes -- shortbread cookies!!

Somehow, in between all of the above, we managed, with direction from our fearless leader and bus driver, (Kelly), to collect all of the ingredients we would need to make cheese scones, for ourselves, and, a variety of festive cookies, for our high-school friends.

Everyone had a wonderful time at the store and sang songs on both legs of the bus ride . . . today was another example of why, we, the teachers, so enjoy our work . . . and, on behalf of us all, I take this opportunity to, once again, thank you for sharing your children with us, all week long!!

"WINTER WONDERLAND!!"

Good Morning, Families, Friends and Blog-Followers,

Because Friday was really cold and very windy, our time outdoors was shortened, but, the day was filled with festive offerings, during Activity Time, and, throughout the day, as well!!

Miss Amy prepared a lovely presentation, for the first day of Hanukkah, which included sharing, with the children, a Menorah and reading about the Holiday -- additionally, Amy allowed the kids to peruse two wonderful storybooks related to Hanukkah -- thank you, Miss Amy!!

Our friends from the Minuteman C&T HS designed, planned and implemented many seasonal art and language-based projects, such as collages entitled "Winter Wonderland" and "Of What Do Trees Remind You?", glittery and colorful snowflakes, gingerbread men made out of sandpaper and rubbed with cinnamon sticks, "icicles" and other tree decorations and Mitten "Stories" -- thank you, ladies -- our boards and tree should, soon, be filled with many hand-made treasures!!

Additionally, the sensory table was filled with aromatic boughs, and scissors, for cutting, and, the hopscotch rug was looking quite surreal, with cosmotology heads available for holiday makeovers!!

Fine motor skills were reinforced by using glue and sprinkling glitter, rubbing cinnamon into sandpaper, cutting boughs and utilizing combs, ponytial holders and more -- what delightful scents filled our classroom!!

I read, with glasses fashioned out of pipe cleaners, and, looking like Mrs. Claus, (thank you, Christina!!), "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell", another in the series, and, was accompanied by an animated reindeer playing the saxophone -- we danced and sang!!

Our Amaryllisses are sky-high, now, the tallest one reaching over 20 inches -- we anxiously await a red flower!!

Please note that Scholastic Book Orders are due on the 14th, and that, Toys for Tots donations are due on the 15th -- thank you, all, for your continued support!!

Please enjoy the rest of the week-end -- we look forward to greeting you, in the morning.

Lots of Love, Miss Peacock XOXO

"ANTARCTICA"

Dear Friends,

Yes . . . that is what it felt like, in the snow and wind, these past couple of days -- deeply invigorating!!

In addition to experiencing the great outdoors, we have continued to challenge both the Butterflies and Puppies during Activity Time and many other times throughout the day.

A few highlights of Wednesday were enjoying hot chocolate, listening and responding to the Silly Sally story cards, creating a story around Winnie the Pooh characters and reading "I Love You Forever", which I read to my own son, many years ago . . . Special thanks to Mrs. Dolham!!

A few highlights of Thursday were playing a more sophisticated version of "the missing officer", hanging up our Circle Center, (thank you, Miss Downing!!), role-playing "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly", complete with a puppet and soft fabric characters, playing "Wonder Ball" and "Alice the Camel", (thank you, Mrs. Goell !!), and, utilizing pipe cleaners to make festive ornaments for the tree and enjoying winter-themed coloring projects.

Tomorrow, our own Minuteman C & T HS Students will put their talents to work, having designed and implemented their own activities, specially prepared for our little ones -- thank you, ladies!!!!

The Scholastic Book order forms are now in mailboxes, with a due date of December 14, (Monday).

Have a wonderful night, and, we look very forward to seeing you in the morning!!

"LET IT SNOW . . . "

Dear Everyone,

Hmmm . . . more snow . . . kind of a culture shock, after last week's tropical wave . . .

Tuft's Traveling Treasure Trunk was a huge success!! :) The skits that they performed included "Go Bananas", "Where the Wild Things Are", "Red Bench", "Marching Band" and "Obstacle Course" -- as well, the actors asked for audience participation in singing and movement -- the expressions on the faces of Butterflies and Puppies, alike, were of sheer joy, and, quite a beautiful sight . . . After the show, small groups of, (very excited), little ones, high-schoolers and teachers, engaged in additional song and dance!!

Upon the departure of our new-found college friends, we bundled-up for outdoor fun!!

We continue to sing "The December Song", focus on the letter "B" and have new and colorful charts on the walls -- "Today Is . . . " and "Season and Weather" -- as well -- the teachers are working hard to create a more seasonal look for our walls and boards!!

Activity Time presented some very new and slightly different offerings, such as, the bumpy, curvy and rounded balance beam used as a track for driving vehicles of a wide variety, work with shapes, tugboats transporting wild animals, snow with pails and shovels, sculpting with playdough, glitter and chenielle stems, and, much, much more!!

We read many books, including, but not limited to "Under the Ground" and "Jobs", both by Usborne, and, Mrs. Goell and the children role-played the ever-popular "Caps for Sale".

Soon, you should find new Scholastic Book order forms in your mailboxes -- I am very excited that, just yesterday, "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell!!", another delightful read authored by Lucille Colandro and illustrated by Jared Lee, was shipped to our school -- (very timely) -- which I am hoping to read, tomorrow!!

Be safe, all . . .

"THE SNOWY DAY!!"

Dear All,

Yesterday began our second week learning about Community Helpers, and, our first day of snow!! (I just had to read "The Snowy Day", a classic, by Ezra Jack Keats, and "Bear", a story of limited words, by one of my personal favorites, Raymond Briggs.)

And, Kelly has begun teaching our little ones their addresses!!

At Circle, Mrs. Dolham & Miss Downing played a game in which the kids guessed wh/ "officer" was missing, with descriptives -- it was great fun -- and -- Miss Maggie dressed up as a police officer, allowing Butterflies and Puppies to try on her husband's jacket and hat -- I took many photos --thank you, Miss Maggie!!

We sang the "B" song, played in the snow -- (even built a snowman named "Frosty"!!) -- and enjoyed many choices, especially wet ones, (!!), during Activity Time.

The snow in the sensory table was polka-dotted, eventually turning purple!!

The children practiced "brushing teeth" using bases covered with shaving cream and barber-style brushes, painted tracks with vehicles, played Alphabet Bingo, Weighed toy animals with scales, pulled tugboats filled with small building blocks, began piecing together a floor-size puzzle of a fire-engine, and, again, thoroughly enjoyed woodworking activities!!

Today, we welcome Tufts "Travelling Treasure Trunk" and another snowy day!!

"JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL"

Dear Families, Friends and Blog Followers,

Although it is still raining, it is relatively mild, and, I find it rather surreal to hear and see birds and other winged creatures confused by the warmth of the season -- just the other day, outdoors, at school, we heard the joyous sound and saw the splendid sight of a v-shaped flock of birds, flying overhead, and . . . to the north? Breathtaking.

Because the weather was crisp, yesterday, Mrs. Dolham decided that all would benefit from extended time outdoors -- and -- what a great decision it turned-out to be -- with long, thick strips of packing paper, Liz initiated the construction of a zig-zag obstacle course, adding hoops for jumping and a slide for added "mmpphh" -- then -- we rolled-up some of the paper, small and tight, and used said for "basketballs" of a sort -- great fun was had by all!!

During Activity Time, the children thoroughly enjoyed walking the curvy, bumpy and rounded balance beam, working -- very carefully -- at the wood-working bench -- with real wood, hammers, nails, and, of course, safety glasses -- (thank you, Miss Amy!!), utilizing scales and colored lenzes and painting, among a myriad of additional activities -- in addition to having a grand time, the children practiced their gross and fine-motor skills, as well as, experienced added hands-on sensory, art, language, math and science-based projects.

During said time, we listed to Judy Schachner tell her story of Skippy Jon's trip to Mars, via CD.

Olivia, one of our Lexington High School students, read "I Love Trains", to the kids, written by Philemon Sturgess and illustrated by Sharon Halpern, and, as hoped, I shared the story of "The Three Snow Bears", by Jan Brett.

And, our two Amaryllis plants are growing beyond the size of a standard ruler -- the first plant is almost 11 inches, its parts spread out like a fan, and the second plant is over 12 inches, its bud preparing to flower.

I do hope that all of you are enjoying some of the festivities offered in celebration of the holiday season -- this week-end, Mrs. Goell dances her heart out at the annual Holiday Show, and, Alana performed, with her choir members, this morning, in a fabulous show, at Fanueill Hall Marketplace!!

Happy Holidays, and -- please -- enjoy the rest of the week-end, with loved ones, in this marvelous season of giving!!

"A BRIGHT, BRIGHT SUNSHINY DAY!!!!"

Dear Families, Friends and Blog Followers,

It is December 3rd, and, this afternoon, I took photos of my little friends, playing out on the deck -- donning shirts and pants -- unbelievable!!!!

Today was filled with a great deal of physical activity, singing and dancing, reading, and, much, much more . . .

After moring Circle, with Liz, we sang the "A" song and read "Annie the Acrobat", with Kelly -- then -- got out a trunkful of socks, put them on our right hands and greeted our friends, and, sang the accompanying song as well as, "There's a Dog in Our School" -- ("oo-oh my!!") -- at afternoon Meeting, Tammy led us all in "Joe and the Button Factory" and the "Good Day Song" -- thank you, teachers!!

During Activity Time, the children, again, enjoyed the obstacle course, played with our new wooden train set and in the "dirt", and, participated in many other theme-based and art, language, math and science-based activities, as well as "Nutrition Lotto".

Much was observed and learned and fun was had by all!!

We are re-decorating the front hallway with photography and snowflakes and dedicating a section of "The Dot Wall" to the world of Jan Brett, author and illustrator -- tomorrow, I plan to read "The Snow Bears", Jan's lush re-working of "Goldilocks".

Please enjoy your evening -- we look very forward to seeing you in the morning -- (feel free to bring lounge chairs, sun block and "shades"?!?!)

"A FULL DAY!!"

Dear Families, Friends and Blog Followers,

Today, we had many visitors including friends from LHS and the LABB Program -- (welcome, Alyssa!!) -- and Mrs. Devlin and her Freshman Explorers from Minuteman C & T HS -- as well -- the children were thrilled to see Mr. Houle drive through in his "race car", early, this morning!!

Outdoors, the children thoroughly enjoyed decorating and utilizing empty cardboard boxes for train cars, and, at activity time, our Butterflies and Puppies lined-up, time and time again, at the obstacle course, which consisted of ribbon twirls, hopscotch squares, a straight balance beam and a gymnastics mat.

As well, all were invited to engage in a variety of language-based, (such as letter recognition, writing on chaulkboards and typing on keyboards), and math and science activities, (such as one-to-one correspondence, patterning, sorting and measuring).

At Circle Time, we continued to review the month and practice "The December Song", as well as, discuss what we would like to be when we grow up -- today's answers are as follows:

Kirsten -- Veterinarian
Juliana -- Firefighter -- (Go, Girl!!)
Nyah -- "Cinderella"
Molly -- A "Baker", (who promised to bake a princess cake for Nyah, and one for Juliana, as well . . . )
Nicky and Kolby -- Astronauts
Phil and John -- Race Car Drivers
Gryffin -- A "Purple" Race Car
Sheena -- A "Chicken" !!!!

I was more excited, than the kids, to read, "Skippy Jon Jones, Lost in Spice", the newest addition to her series, by Judy Schachner -- and -- said, in our best Spanish accents, "my eers are too beeg for my head, and my head is too beeg for my body, and . . . " -- well -- you have heard the rest, before!!

Another thank you, to those of you who have, thus far, contributed to Miss Sashi's collection for "Toys for Tots" -- we welcome donations of toys, books, and, more, for infants through teenagers, and, again, are very grateful for your thoughtful and generous support of all the School's endeavors.

We look forward to seeing many of you, bright and early, tomorrow morning!!

"THE MONTH OF DECEMBER"

Good Evening, All,

Today, at Circle, Liz reviewed the month of December, and, its many special days -- in addition to all of the holidays, Tufts University's "Travelling Treasure Trunk" will be performing, for the Butterflies and Puppies, and Charlotte will be turning four -- "Happy Birthday, Charlotte !!"

Under Mrs. Dolham's tutelage, as well, we played "charades", and fully appreciated the string of Community Helpers that she hung across the classroom wall -- thank you, Liz!!

This week, Kelly is teaching the children the "A" song -- a different letter song will be practiced, each week, in order to reinforce letter recognition and associated sounds -- and -- with Miss Amy's fabulous hand-fashioned block, she, as well, guided our little friends in a sing-along, which included "Baby Bumblebee" and "Wheels on the Bus". Miss Downing read ""If I Were . . . ", a Gymboree book, and, I read "The Train" by Paul Collicutt -- we flew like pilots and drove like race car drivers -- "WHOOSH!!".

New activites, along with lots of music, were incorporated into the mix, this morning, including the balance beam, which was extremely popular, and an excellent means to encouraging gross motor skill development -- and -- the kids thoroughly enjoyed pulling their stuffed animal friends around in tugboats and playing "Color and Shape Bingo".

And, although cold, we had an invigorating outdoor experience!! (Please consider leaving extra hats and mittens, at school, with your children, to ensure that they are appropriately dressed, as the weather becomes colder -- thank you!!)

Have a wonderful evening, and, we look forward to seeing many of you, in the morning!!

"HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!"

Dear Friends,

Good evening -- I trust that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day vacation, and, that John had a "Happy Birthday!!" -- I noticed a birthday crown and decorations, when I arrived, today, so, there must have been a celebration at AM snack!! :)

And, a "Happy Birthday!!" to Ellie's Poppy Don, and, a thank-you to Ellie's Nanna Daphne, for the yummalicious ricotta cheese pie -- "MMMM . . . ", on behalf of all the teachers!!!!

Well, today was the last day of November's song and the first day of December's theme "Community Helpers" -- we will be very busy preparing for the Holidays, as well, and welcome you all to share family and cultural traditions, in the classroom -- our school's philosophy solidly encourages familial involvement.

When I arrived, it was already activity time, and, again, no worries -- the children played indoors, beautifully -- Mrs. Dolham and Miss Maggie were busy in the block area, where the kids were playing the roles of various community helpers, utilizing legos and blocks -- Miss Maggie was pretending to drive a truck -- "vroom, vroom!!" -- as well, she began teaching us a few words and phrases in Spanish, and, hopefully, will teach us a song or two.

Thanks to Kelly, Liz and Miss Sashi, the books, in our library, have been rotated to include the new theme, and, the school is beginning to look like a doctor's office, complete with cots, medical kits, an eye chart and post-it notes -- thank you, Kirsten, for the sign "Doctor's Office" , proudly displayed at the "Reception Desk".

Our Butterflies and Puppies enjoyed singing the "A" song, typing themed words, making "STOP" signs, playing Nutrition Lotto and the Doughnut Game and measuring our two Amaryllis plants -- our original plant is now nine inches tall, with a bud, and, our gift from Defne is now nine and a half inches tall -- WOW!!

We read many theme-related books today, about mail carriers, rescue vehicles and more, and, at PM meeting read "There Was A Cold Lady That Swallowed Some Snow", written by Lucille Colandro and illustrated by Jared Lee -- please ask your little ones what the Cold Lady made with the items she ate . . .

I enjoyed rest-time, with my small friends, today -- a real treat!!

Happy Trails!!

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, AT OUR CDC!!

Dear Fine-Feathered Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving Day!!

To all who participated in our Thanksgiving Day Feast, held on Tuesday, a great big "THANK YOU!!" It was quite a success!! Special thanks to Kelly and Liz, who did much of the preparation and virtually all of the cooking.

Liz "churned" fresh butter, with the children, to accompany our spectacular turkey, cooked by Kelly, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots, stuffing, cornbread, cran-raspberry sauce and "Acorns" -- the dessert made by Tyler, and his mom, Melissa!!

The children enjoyed their feast at a beautifully decorated table, used their hand-made placemats, napkins fashioned into turkey shapes by Miss Sashi, and, some wore simple Pilgrim and Native American attire that we had made in the morning -- of course -- we have many wonderful photos -- and -- thank you, Debbie, Kirsten's mom, for helping us to serve the meal!!

On Tuesday, as well, our LHS friends made "glove turkeys", with the Butterflies and Puppies, and, played "Nutrition Lotto" -- one of the many new games and toys purchased, by Miss Downing, from Lakeshore -- (thank you, Kelly!!) -- and, when the students from our own MM C&T HS arrived, the children made embelished feathers, played with our beautiful new train set, (tx, Kel . . . :)), and in many of our themed learning centers -- our "rocket" became a "canoe" for the young Pilgrims and Native Americans!!

Of course, we sang songs and read stories, from books brought in by Kirsten and Nyah, as well as gathered together for "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving".

Mrs. Goell led us all in the "Parade of Colors" and "Beanbag Fun"!! :)

On Wednesday, after much fun playing number bingo, the teachers acted-out "Stone Soup", for the kids, and, during activity time, Mrs. Dolham cut-up vegetables, with each of our little friends, to prepare our own version of said, which was truly delicious -- thank you, Liz!!

Prior to the performance, Liz led a very Thanksgiving-based Circle, and, taught us all how to "clap" in sign language!!

In the dramatic play area, many of the kids used pots and pans, utensils and pretend foods to make soup and muffins -- we colored paper turkeys, and played a couple of rounds of "Pin the Hat on the Turkey", which was great fun!!

Activities encouraging the use of fine motor skills, such as drawing and writing, lacing and building, were enjoyed, as well.

We surely packed a great deal of learning and fun into a very short week -- and, now -- it is time to celebrate Thanksgiving Day!!

ENJOY!!

"TOMORROW'S THANKSGIVING DAY FEAST!!"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog-Followers,

As it seems the case every year, the Holidays are very much upon us, all too soon!!

So, this year, thanks to the teachers, (especially Mrs. Dolham), and families, as well, we have planned a Thanksgiving Day Feast, to take place, tomorrow!!

This morning, we read " . . . If You Sailed On The Mayflower in 1620", written by Ann McGovern and illustrated by Anna DiVito, and, talked about the long, dangerous pilgrimage, as well as, the landing, the decision to settle, and, of course -- new friends -- the Native Americans, who taught the Pilgrims how to hunt for food, grow crops, survival techniques and a great deal more.

Miss Downing showed a(n) historical video clip.

Liz made-up a nice, little Thanksgiving "diddy", and, Mrs. Goell taught us, the following:

The turkey is a funny bird,
Whose head goes wobble, wobble;
The only song that he can sing is,
Gobble, gobble, gobble!!

(Sung to the tune, "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush")

Mrs. Dolham had the children make quite special placemats, for tomorrow's feast, and, I have fashioned simple Pilgrim and Native American themed head-bands, and, displayed a "Put the Hat on the Turkey Game -- and -- of course -- Miss Downing has prepared the acting-out of "Stone Soup"!!

Today, I arrived to Kelly reading "Dinofours -- I'm Not Your Friend", written by Stew Metzger and illustrated by Hans Wilhelm, by flashlight -- always great fun -- to our Butterflies and Puppies.

Kelly continues to work on Handwriting Without Tears, with the Butterflies, and, Liz continues to work on the days of the week and months of the year, with the Puppies.

Just before Circle Time, I read "Rosie's Walk", (twice!!), by Pat Hutchins and "Hush Little Alien", (a favorite sing-along!!), by Daniel Kirk.

At our Afternoon Meeting, we admired the photo of a lamb, taken at Drumlin Farm, and, measured our two Amaryllis plants -- approximately 7.5 " and 5 ", respectively.

We had much fun outdoors, and, during Activity Time, climbed on the -- very popular -- wooden structure, built with soft, foam blocks and pretend foods, had quite a lot of fun in the sensory table, as onions and wooden cars have now been added, studied cut-up vegetables, measured "more or less", and, worked on our "All About Me Robots" and with pattern cards -- fine and gross motor, science, math, language arts, art and social and emotional skills were fostered by such a wide array of activities.

In addition to our high-school friends from Lexington and Minuteman Career and Technical High Schools, we welcomed "Miss Maggie", today, who is the mom of three, (two who attended our CDC!!), and, now, studying Early Childhood Education at Middlesex College -- Miss Maggie will be joining us on Mondays -- WELCOME, MISS MAGGIE!!

Kira, Tiana, Andrea and Lainey prepared a very special "Glove Turkey" project, which they will assist the kids with, tomorrow morning -- thank you, Ladies, for all of your hard work!!!!

We trust that you are "wowed" by the school pictures, and, we are very grateful to those of you who have donated items to our "Toys for Tots" center, located in the Cubby Room -- and -- due to the Usborne book orders received thus far, our classroom has earned $100 in free books . . .

So . . . a greatly deserved THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Lots of Love, Miss Peacock XOXO

"THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER HAS THANKSGIVING DAY . . . "

Dear Friends, Families and Blog-Followers,

Despite the rain, today, our CDC was filled with activity, and, after lunch, the children enjoyed some time outdoors, playing games, with Mrs. Dolham and Miss Sashi, on the deck!!

During Circle, among many other fun things, Liz made two charts, with the Butterflies and Puppies:

For what are we thankful ? (The answers were priceless!!)

What food do we like most? (apples, carrots or corn ?)

Apples -- Gryffin, Tyler Phil and John

Carrots -- Kirsten ( -- & -- corn, too!! )

Corn -- Sheena, Charlotte, Molly, Juliana, Nyah, Orion, Nicky and Kolby

Then, we gathered around our big, curvy art table, and, under Liz's direction, made pictures for placemats to be used at our Thanksgiving Day Feast, (Tuesday)!!

Again, projects were added to the choices offered at Activity Time, such as fingerpainting, as well as, new manipulatives and building toys -- lacing cards were especially enjoyed, today, in tandem with triangular pennants depicting pictures of nutritious foods, cut out, by the kids, during the course of the week.

I have never seen such a fabulous clean-up, as today -- congratulations, all!!!!

At afternoon meeting, we measured our Amaryllises -- (we now have two -- one was a gift from Defne's family) -- they measured six inches and four inches, respectively.

We read a wonderfully heartwarming book, by Dav Pilkey -- "Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving" -- a great turkey rescue!!!!

Please remember that, should you wish to order Usborne books, do see a CDC staff member, and, if you would like to make donations to Toys for Tots, the decorative box is located in the Cubby Room, and to our Thanksgiving Day Feast, (Tuesday), supplies needed are noted on the sign-in and out table.

Enjoy the week-end, everyone!!

"OUR THANKSGIVING DAY FEAST!!"

Dear Families, Friends and Blog Followers,

Today was the last day of the Usborne Book Fair, and -- yes -- Miss Downing, (Director, Teacher and Bus Driver extraordinaire), drove all of us over to Minuteman's Library to attend said and make "wish lists" -- if you have any questions, at all, about ordering Usborne books, please see a CDC staff member -- thank you!!

While at "The Big School", the kids posed for a group photo in front of the "Mustang", which was fashioned by former Welding students, and, and, then, given festive cookies, to be enjoyed for dessert, compliments of the Bakery, for which we were very appreciative!!

we focused, primarily, on the celebration of Thanksgiving Day, today -- please ask your little ones if they remember the story, that Liz shared with us, of the wild turkey, found living on a highway in New Jersey, rescued, and currently residing at a zoo, there, with a (turkey) friend named "Gobbler" !!

We sang Five Little Turkeys, and, re-read Ten Little Turkeys, as well, played with our high school friends, outdoors, and, much, much more!!

Please know that there is a sign-up sheet, on the sign-in and out table, for contributions to our "Thanksgiving Day Feast", which will take place on Tuesday -- please feel free to ask questions, and/or make comments and/or suggestions!!

"LITTLE BY LITTLE"

Dear All,

I would like to share a poem used by one of Minuteman's Sophomores in Early Childhood Education, for a seasonal activity presented, to the children, on Friday:

LITTLE BY LITTLE

"Little by little," the acorn said,
As it slowly sank in its mossy bed,
"I am improving every day,
Hidden deep in the earth away."
Little by little each day it grew;
Little by little it sipped the dew;
Downward it sent out a threadlike root;
Up in the air sprung a tiny shoot,
Day after day, and year after year,
Little by little the leaves appear;
And the slender branches spread far and wide,
Till the mighty oak is the forest's pride.

"Little by little," said the thoughtful boy,
"Moment by moment, I'll well employ,
Learning a little every day,
And not misspending my time in play;
Whatever I do I will do it well.
Little by little, I'll learn to know
The treasured wisdom of long ago;
And one of these days, perhaps, will see
That the world will be the better for me."

Do enjoy these years with your children -- the days are long, but, the years are fast . . .

"ASTRONAUT ICE-CREAM!!"

Dear Families, Friends and Blog Followers,

It is true -- Miss Downing treated all of the children to freeze-dried ice cream, and, during Circle, Mrs. Dolham charted preferences:

Vanilla

Nicky

Strawberry

Nyah, Gryffin and Phil

Chocolate

Kevin, Kirsten, Molly, Juliana, Kolby and Emma (one of our two new friends beginning, soon -- WELCOME!!!!) -- Sheena was "indisposed", at the time -- :).

Our classroom was filled with activity, again, today -- Lexington High School students, our friends from the LABB Program, Mrs. Devlin and more Freshman Explorers, and, "Lolli" -- our neighbor, to whom the kids presented a great big card -- thank you, Butterflies and Puppies, alike!!

We did lots of singing and dancing, and both soft blocks and a seasonal arrangement of books were added-in to the mix at Activity Time.

We did a great deal of reading, today, as well -- stories included, but, were not limited to, "The Shy Scarecrow" authored by Mary Packard and illustrated by Benrei Huang, "The Very Busy Spider" by Eric Carle, "That's Not My Robot", (Usborne), and, many, many more -- as I was at school until after rest time, I heard lots more storytelling done by Mrs. Dolham, Mrs. Goell and Miss Downing, as well.

And, again, we spent quite a bit of time, outdoors!!

The Usborne Book Fair continues, as does the box begin to fill-up with contributions to "Toys for Tots" -- Thank you, one and all!!

"ANOTHER BUSY DAY!!"

Dear Families, Friends and Blog-Followers,

Today was, yet, another day -- perfect -- for outdoor activity -- we played running games and basketball, climbed in and out of the castle -- well -- the children did . . . and pulled and pushed wagons, galloping like strong Carriage Horses and running like excited Alaskan Huskies!!

Mrs. Dolham found a leaf frozen in ice, and placed it in a bucket, to see if, when the ice melted, the leaf remained as it was -- the ice simply turned back into water, around the leaf, leaving said in one piece.

In addition to singing about the months of the year, days of the week, and much, much more, Liz played a game, with the Butterflies and Puppies, to reinforce the differences between healthy, nutritious foods, and, foods that we should eat only occasionally -- :).

Miss Downing, utilizing technology, (her laptop!!), and, turning teaching into fun, once again, practiced upper and lower case letters, sounds and some sign language, as well, with the group -- we learned how to sign the letters "A", "B" and "C", and the symbols for "mother", "father", "girl" and "boy".

Because of delayed openings at the high schools, this morning, we were unable to trek over to the "Big School", and rather, Mrs. Devlin brought some freshman explorers over to play with the kids, during activity time, while the Usborne Book Fair took place on and off-site -- Kelly placed abbreviated versions of the catalogs in mailboxes and order forms on the sign-in and out table -- there are more all-encompassing catalogs to view, at school, as well as books to peruse -- you may order, on-line, as well -- information is readily available!!

Before Mary Ellen and her charges departed, we all sang "Happy Birthday!!" to Mrs. Devlin and presented her with a lovely gift -- thank you, everyone, for your participation!!

Today, our climbing structure "magically re-appeared", on the hopscotch rug, for climbing -- up, down and all around -- and, was enjoyed by all!!

Tammy, again, brought us joy, via her "good morning" song and the re-telling of "Caps for Sale" -- thank you, Mrs. Goell!!

Please know that there is a large and beautifully decorated box in the Cubby Room, courtesy of Miss Sashi -- who -- is planning to read "Pancakes for Supper" , tommorow, and make said, for afternoon snack -- dedicated to collecting "Toys for Tots" -- all contributions are welcome -- items for teenagers are especially needed -- thank you, all, in advance, for your generosity.

Annual Usborne Book Fair, Today!!!!

Please remember Usborne books -- there are always expanded categories from which to choose, and, all of its books are real treasures and stellar gifts -- enjoy!!!! XOXO.

"LET'S GO BANANAS!!"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog Followers,

Good evening!!

Today, we focused, mainly, on practicing skill sets and healthy eating -- in fact -- thanks to Mrs. Dolham and Miss Downing, the children combined the themes of outer space and healthy eating by stuffing celery sticks with cream cheese and adding raisins -- "astronauts on rockets!!"

And, during Circle, Liz created a chart by having each of the kids name and draw a nutritious food:

Bananas -- Sheena, Nick, John and Nyah
Yogurt -- Orion, Gryffin and Molly
Apples -- Kirsten and Noy
Carrots -- Kevin
Lemons -- Phil
Chicken -- Ellie

Liz and I have continued, during Circle, to review the calendar and sing the November Song, among other things, with the Puppies, while Kelly works on Handwriting Without Tears, (HWT), with the Butterflies.

During Activity Time, the kids had opportunities to cut and lace, build and utilize manipulatives, all of which encourage the use of motor, especially, fine motor, skills.

As well, while "The Diary of a Worm" played, our Butterflies and Puppies played in the sensory table, which was filled with dirt, small pails of water and vegetables.

At Afternoon Meeting, we measured our Amaryllis, now five inches tall, and, still growing (!!) -- and -- read "The Lonely Scarecrow" written by Tim Preston and illustrated by Maggie Kneen, after which I asked each child his or her favorite season, and, why:

Winter -- Orion, Molly, Kirsten, Nyah, Gryffin and Kevin

(Getting on all of their snow gear, (?!), playing in the snow, sledding, building snowmen and making snowballs!!)

Fall/Autumn -- Ellie, Nick and Phil

(Foliage trips and Halloween!!)

Summer -- Sheena and Noy

(More time to play outdoors!!)

Many of our little friends brought in books, from home, today, which is highly encouraged, and the teachers, high-school students and youngsters had a grand time reading a variety of stories!!

Outdoors, we practiced and reinforced gross motor skills by running, climbing, riding, etc., and, playing a great deal of soccer and basketball, during which time, Orion called-out, "I got a rebound!!"

Please remember that the Usborne Book Fair takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and, that, we will be travelling over to the "Big School" and making-out "wish lists", for the children, (and ourselves!!).

Next Wednesday, we plan to act out "Stone Soup", which has become a Thanksgiving tradition at our Child Development Center.

Have a wonderful night, and, we all look very forward to tomorrow, and the beginning of the annual Book Fair!!

"I LOVE A RAINY NIGHT"

Good Evening, Friends,

I understand that Thursday was another fun-filled day at the CDC.

And, Friday marked the last day of school for our beloved Defne -- we wish her family all the joys of a successful new venture -- many thanks to Kelly, who made a fabulous DVD, and, many thanks to Liz, who fashioned a beautiful portfolio, out of the photos that we had taken, so far, this year, for Defne's family.

A lovely tea party was planned, at which the children decorated tea cups and enjoyed rainbow chip muffins and frozen yogurt -- thank you, Ayse, (Defne's Mom) !!

We made up a song at afternoon meeting and presented Defne with gifts -- tears were shed, and, all were very gracious, indeed -- "BOO HOO" . . .

We measured our Amaryllis, which grew to 3 3/4 inches -- almost a full inch in less than a week -- its ability to grow, very quickly, makes it among the favorite planting activities.

We have continued to read books by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond, and, yesterday, I brought in "The Pig" from "If You Give A Pig A Pancake", for all to hold, and, hung the completed outer-space themed ornaments on our celebratory tree.

Mrs. Dolham read the Crunching Munching Caterpillar, of which Jack "Tickle" was the illustrator, and I read Ten Fat Turkeys written by Tony Johnston and illustrated by Rick Deas.

We have continued to host many visitors, from the surrounding schools, and, each and every one of them has made multiple and wonderful contributions -- our neighbor, "Lolli", stopped by, on Fri., as well -- thank you, all!!

Our high-schoolers from Minuteman's Career and Technical High School planned many festive activities for the Butterflies and Puppies, yesterday, including, but not limited to, a tagboard turkey, with leaves noting for what our children are thankful, (already displayed), differently-styled paper acorn collages, fingerprint turkey paintings, foam turkey door hangers and a deliciously-smelling pumpkin pie craft -- thank you, Haley, Victoria, Amanda, Bri, Christina, Crystal, Elise, Mikayla and Andrea, as well as Mrs. Devlin, and all those involved in bringing great joy to our little ones!!

Please enjoy the remainder of the week-end!!

With lots of love -- Miss Peacock XOXO

"WHERE WOULD YOUR ROCKET TAKE YOU?"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog-Followers,

Good evening!!

For the past two days, we have been working on lots of new theme-related projects, begun measuring the growth of our amaryllis, (three inches as of Monday), and spent plenty of time, outdoors.

New outer space-related activities include making paper mache "planets", "space crafts" from recycleables -- reduce, re-use-recycle -- , tree ornaments using "rocket", "helmet" and "Saturn" cut-outs, (with a language component), "All About Me" Robot posters, and drawings depicting day and night.

Guided by many of our high-schoolers and older friends, the children "walked the Moon's surface", (sponges, pillows and blankets), played a "solar system" question and answer game and visited many of our learning centers -- the kids, wearing oxygen tanks made out of two-liter plastic bottles and colored duct tape -- are especially enjoying the rocket ship, located in the dramatic play area.

With visuals provided by the laptop and music supplied by both Amy and technology (:)), we have been partying in our own little "world"!!

Because the weather has been delightful, we have noticed many insects, outdoors, taken an investigative walk, with Mrs. Dolham, and filled ghost-patterned bags, with leaves, for use as yard decorations.

I showed the Butterflies and Puppies a glass bottle, filled with part water, part vegetable oil, food coloring and foil balls, which looked like planets floating in space -- and -- thanks to Miss Downing, the book area has been moved, closer to the piano, and a "quiet space" fashioned out of wood, has been added -- (the chocolate chip cookies were actually made for our friends from the Maintenance Department, who have continued to help us with building projects, both big and small -- thank you!!)

We have been dancing and singing, ("Joe and the Button Factory", "Tooty Ta", "Hokey Pokey" and "Johnny Uses One Hammer"), for example, and, of course, reading books!!

Mrs. Goell read "What a Wonderful World" written by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele and illustrated by Ashley Bryan and "Little Cloud Little Cloud" by Eric Carle and re-introduced "The Parade of Colors", to the group.

Liz read "When the Fly Flew In" authored by Lisa Westberg Peters with pictures by Brad Sneed and I read, accompanied by a plush moose, "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" -- I am planning to read several of Laura Numeroff's and Felicia Bond's books, this week, with friends, "the mouse", "the pig" and "the cat"!!

And, very importantly, a "Very Happy Birthday" to Mary Ellen Devlin!!

May you all have an enjoyable and safe day, tomorrow, and we all look forward to seeing you on Thursday morning!! :)

Lots of Love, Miss Peacock XOXO :) :)

A WARM SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Dear All,

I do hope that you have enjoyed the week-end thus far -- what a glorious day, indeed!!

On Friday, the children continued viewing interesting shuttle lift-offs and rocket launches and had the opportunity to perform "five little spacemen", while practicing colors and counting spacemen, as there is now a visual aid, thanks to our high school friends, as aforementioned.

Amy (MM Post-Grad) planned and guided a mask-making project, with the children, and Sophie (MM C&THS) set-up an enriching activity time -- additionally -- Sarah (Wayland High) and Olivia, Kelly and Arianne (Lexington High) created and laminated wonderful new signage for our school -- thank you, ladies!!

The Butterflies are working diligently, with Miss Downing, on Handwriting Without Tears, now accompanied by manipulatives and music.

At afternoon meeting, I read "Leafman" (again!!) by Lois Ehlert, around which we are planning an (outdoor) art project, and, as I was leaving, Kelly was busy making chocolate chip cookies, for a special treat.

Please be reminded of a mid-week holiday and that, our much-loved Defne, will soon be moving to Washington, D.C., with her family . . . we are preparing a tea party, thanks to Kelly, for Defne, this week.

We look very forward to seeing you, all, again, beginning tomorrow!!

CHILLY NOVEMBER DAYS

Dear Families, Friends and Blog-Followers,

Hopefully, you will notice several additions to our classroom decor, as of yesterday, (Thursday) -- Thanks to Mrs. Dolham and Miss Downing, and, of course, the Butterflies and Puppies, our life size family tree is displayed on the wall abutting the deck -- it has been decorated with the "leaves" that Liz has received, so far, as well as an endearing collection of forest animals!!

As well, our high school friends from both Minuteman's and Lexington's programs, especially Sophie (Minuteman) and Sarah (Lexington), crafted a poster titled, as is the song and fingerplay, "Five Little Spacemen", for display during Circle-Time!!

And, Liz and Sophie put together, beautifully, the rocket ship that the children painted, outdoors -- it is, now, located in the dramatic play area!!

As well, and with many thanks to Kelly, we now have additional shelving for our plethora of books and supplies!!

Kelly discovered that the "Orion" (!!) crew is gearing up for a state of the art space project -- the goal, for landing, is to make a smooth entry via runway, versus water, so that the crew can actually "walk out" onto solid ground.

Miss Downing dove headfirst into "Handwriting Without Tears", today, with the Butterflies, after which they joined us, outdoors.

Kelly practiced the concept of "left" and "right" with all of the children and had them doing somersaults on a gymnast's mat -- Even Ellie's "Poppy" joined in the fun!!

We had more Freshman Explorers over for a visit, along with Mrs. Devlin.

Among the books read, were, "Pajama Time" (again!!) by Sandra Boynton and "Chicken Soup with Rice" (a book of months) by Maurice Sendak.

As aforementioned, I will be submitting any Scholastic Book Orders, and have extended the submission date to today -- if you are interested, I will provide instructions to order on-line, which will allow families, and the Child Development Center, to receive additional, free books!!

Have a stellar day and a glorious week-end!!

"WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE MOON?"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog-Followers,

Today, we were, again, joined by several of our high-school friends, and, later, by Alana, as well, and answered many questions about travel in outer space, in general, and the moon, in particular.

For example, it takes four days to travel from the earth to the moon -- in a FAST aircraft -- and, during the trip, when the fuel has been depleted, the tanks are released -- some crafts land on runways, while others splash down in seas and oceans.

The moon is full of peaks and valleys, and, large holes, called "craters", and it sustains no life -- it is very still -- there exists no wind, so, that the buggy, Flag, and, even, footsteps, have been left behind.

As in the water, bodies are buoyant, and, the earth looks as small from the moon as does the moon from the earth!!

There is nothing to breathe, so space travellers must "suit-up", as noted, below.

During Circle, Miss Downing led us all in drawing "Matman" as an astronaut, and asked the children what he would need for a safe trip -- based on their answers, Kelly added a space-suit, boots and gloves, a helmet, air/oxygen tanks, rope, and, of course, space-dried ice cream?!

Both Miss Downing and Mrs. Dolham have been leading our little friends in lots of theme-related role-playing, games and songs.

Today, we read both non-fictional and fictional theme-related stories, such as, "On the Moon" (Usborne) written by Anna Milbourne, illustrated by Benji Davis and designed by Laura Fearn, "That's Not My Robot" (Usborne) written by Fiona Walt and illustrated by Rachel Wells, "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, I'm Off to the Moon" by Dan Yaccarino and "How to Trick or Treat in Outer Space" written by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by Paul Brewer.

The kids enjoyed squeezing my "alien" looking pen, as its pliable brain expanded -- (excellent for fine motor skill development -- really!!)

And, some other books of interest, and read to the Butterflies and Puppies, included, "How do Dinosaurs say Good-night" by Jane Yolen (an author from western Massachusetts) and Mark Teague and "Smiley Shark" by Ruth Galloway.

Kolby was very warmly welcomed by Butterflies and Puppies, alike -- today -- his first official day -- congratulations, everyone!!

Scholastic Book Order and Usborne Book Fair

Please know that Scholastic Book Orders are due tomorrow -- I would like to submit said, as soon as possible, so that everything arrives in plenty of time, for holiday reading and gift giving, and, that the Usborne Book Fair is scheduled for November 17 - 19 -- details to follow -- thank you!! :)

"Our New Friend!!"

Good Morning, All,

Our new friend, Kolby, whom we met yesterday, is joining us, for his first day, today, as a Puppy -- Welcome, Kolby!!

And, please check-out our front porch, beautifully decorated for the season, with our fancy-schmancy pumpkins and stuffed scarecrows -- thank you, Kelly!!

Yesterday, (Tuesday), we talked more about space exploration, accompanied by new video clips, thanks, as well, to Miss Downing!!

We read several stories about outer space, and, added a couple of new activities, after coming in from outdoors, including soil and vegetables in the sensory table, and themed keyboarding -- as well as entertainment -- our own Miss Amy, on the piano, playing the theme from "Star Wars"(!!) -- and much, much more!!

We have had surprise visits from some of our Freshman "explorers", and other special friends, expertly guided by Mary Ellen Devlin -- thank you for visiting!!

Tammy read "Today is Monday", later accompanied by the song, by Eric Carle, as well, which the children really enjoyed.

After lunch, we planted what was left of our pumpkin seeds, outdoors.

Miss Downing is planning a field-trip to "Super Stop & Shop", in Lexington, to look at nutritious foods, and purchase ingredients, in order for the children to make a healthy food, at school -- more information is forthcoming.

Please know that Midland Fundraising materials, as well as Reading Challenge certificates, are in mailboxes -- and -- Liz anxiously awaits your "leaves" -- thank you!!

We will soon be re-decorating our tree to display ornamentation reflecting the Outer Space theme, making "All About Me" Robot posters, baking pumpkin cakes, etc.

We are gearing-up for, yet, another month of learning and fun, at Minuteman's Child Development Center!!

"ONE, TWO, THREE, BLASTOFF!!"

Good Afternoon, All,

Today was the first day of a new theme, Outer Space, a favorite of students and teachers, alike!!

After practicing our "November Song", (lyrics in mailboxes -- thank you!!), talking about Thanksgiving and reviewing the calendar, with Mrs. Dolham, and, doing a themed finger play and watching a space shuttle launch with Miss Downing, the children went outdoors to paint boxes, that will, soon, become rocket ships!!

Our Butterflies and Puppies discovered a wonderfully big pile of leaves with which they had great fun, as well.

Several of our older friends, from LHS, are visiting us, in the mornings, while, Sophie, one of our many friends from the "Big School", remains throughout activitiy time.

With photographs of planets and stars, strewn about, the kids diligently began creating their "Space Journals" and used magic slates, colored pencils and yellow chaulk to draw the universe, constellations of stars and "aliens" -- here, the focus was on fine motor skills and the use of imagination.

In the block area, some children built space ships, while, on the hopscotch rug, others enjoyed an outer-space themed bean-bag game.

Our "spooky farm stand" will probably become less frightening, soon, and, continues to encourage the practice of buying and selling -- this morning, especially, it was quite busy, along with the "restaurant", which was set-up in the dramatic play area.

The concept of "space" inspires wonderful conversations about what we know of life beyond the earth and what questions remain unanswered -- this month -- the curriculum will assist the kids in obtaining answers to said, in tandem with exploration and discovery.

At our second meeting of the day, I read "Roaring Rockets", authored by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker, and asked each child, what, so far, was his/her favorite point of interest about outer space:

Noy, Nyah and Defne were most excited about seeing the rocket ship, (in the story), land, splash and float in the cold water.

Nick envisioned travelling into outer space, while Phil seemed to want his Mommy along for the ride . . .

John told quite a detailed story about the take-off, travel and landing of a rocket ship, and, Molly imagined a "pink rocket (decorated) with butterflies and flowers, with lots of 'remotes' and a TV, and a kitty lost in space" -- (Go, Molly!! :))

Ellie seemed interested in the talk of space, in general, while Sheena and Orion, (how appropriate a name!!), were ready to "take-off" for lunch!!

In addition, we read books, including "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom", by Dan Yaccarino, and listened to music related to our new theme, as well.

Our Amaryllis is growing, while our apple seeds continue to sprout, in preparation for re-planting.

Sprint and Buddy are wonderful class pets, whose favorite foods are whole grapes, (really!!), carrots and lettuce -- Sprint has the most fun annoying Buddy and falling in and out of the water bowl . . .

The teachers will focus on nutrition, moreso, during the second half of November.

Please enjoy the evening, and, we look forward to seeing many of you, tomorrow!!

Love Miss Peacock XOXO

(Oh -- PS -- Please remember to decorate and return the leaves for our family trees -- what Liz has received, so far, is truly "stellar" work -- thank you!! :))

P.S.!!

Dear All -- Thank you, Debbie Dew, (Kirsten's Mom), for the delicious treats, and, for the contributions of all, to a festive Halloween celebration -- please know that Fawn Rosenberg will be accepting candy, for buy-back, and, shipping, overseas, to our troops, today, as well -- Enjoy!! HALLOWEEN CANDY BUY BACK!!!!

Good Morning, Everyone!!!!

As you very likely know, Friday was a day filled with fun -- our Halloween Parade was a great success -- and -- Kelly looked quite ravishing as a "gothicy princessy witch" behind the wheel of the bus -- our tour took us by the bakery for cookies, lots of "ooohs" and "aaahs" and many photos!!!!

I trust that last night was one of the best ever -- the warm air, gently blowing leaves and quick-moving cloud-cover made for a beautiful, yet "eerie", feel to the evening . . .

Please know that there is a "candy buy-back", today, (Sunday), at the office of Dr. Fawn Rosenberg, (dentist), between approximately 12:00 and 03:00 -- her office is located at 922 Waltham Street in Lexington, and her phone number is 781-861-6008 -- Fawn will donate the candy to our troops, overseas -- Fawn was responsible, as well, for the Unicef boxes distributed, at school, and may be collecting any proceeds -- thank you, and do enjoy the rest of the week-end!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

Dear Friends, Families and Blog-Followers,

Well, it is almost Halloween Parade Day -- please do not forget to pack your children's costumes!!

And , we have surpassed the challenge -- we have read well over 100 books, so far, at School -- congratulations to all of the Butterflies and Puppies -- your certificates and stickers are forthcoming (!!), and, please know that you all have helped to donate one million books to kids less fortunate -- YEAH!!

Today, we read many, many books, including "Clifford's Halloween" by Norman Bridwell, "Inside a House that is Haunted" (a rebus book) written by Alyssa Capucilli with artwork by Tedd Arnold, "Six Creepy Sheep" written by Judith Ross Enderle and Stephanie Gordon Tessel with artwork by John O'Brien, "The Very Busy Spider" (and more) by Eric Carle, "The Very Worst Monster" by Pat Hutchins, "Pajama Time" by Sandra Boynton, "Hush Little Alien" by Daniel Kirk, "Lullabies" (Usborne) and "The Scarecrow's Hat" by Ken Brown, to which Miss Downing added an interactive component, with props!!

In the early morning, the children played "Zingo", and, during activity time our wondrous high school friends planned and assisted with ghost bowling, paper bag and plate monster puppets, trick-or-treat bag decorating and being creative and imaginative with black paper and white crayons and white paper, wax crayons and purple watercolor -- thank you, ladies!!

As well, we spent quite a bit of time outdoors!!

Next week begins new themes, to include the seasonal, outer space and nutrition, and several events are being planned, for the month of November!!

We look very forward to tomorrow's festivities!!!!

WILSON FARM & STORIES BY FLASHLIGHT

Good Evening, All,

While the Butterflies enjoyed their fieldtrip to Wilson Farm -- (thank you for the cider doughnuts, Kelly!!) -- the Puppies had fun eating their "orange" themed snack and pasta, making a fort under which to read books, being made mummies out of by the LHS students and donning tattoos.

We have read at least 95 books, so far, including some of today's stories, such as "Poultrygeist" by Mary Jane and Herm Auch, "Mystery in Bugtown" authored by William Boniface and illustrated by Jim Harris, "Out of the Night" authored by Lola M. Schaefer and illustrated by Roby Gilbert, "Boo!" (again) authored by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko, "Five Little Pumpkins" with pictures by Dan Yaccarino, "Trick or Treat Faces" by Judith Moffatt and the quad "Monster Madness", "Crazy Creatures", "Things that go Boo!" and "Things that go Bump!" authored by Joe Fitzpatrick and illustrated by Paulette Rich Long.

We were joined by Minuteman's Early Childhood Program Friends, as well, who assisted the children in the dramatic play area, brimming with costumes and accessories, and, with a myriad of art projects, which included mask-making.

At afternoon meeting, we sang and moved along to "This Old Mandible" (jawbone) and "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes", and enjoyed bone-themed poems, riddles and more!!

As I was leaving, I finally got to view a little bit of Liz's "Donut Shop" Game, as well as photos of yesterday afternoon's guitar jam, hosted by both Miss Downing and Mrs. Dolham -- thank you!!

And, "Congratulations!!", Mrs. Devlin, on the birth of your third grandaughter, Nora. :)

On Friday, please look for the "five little witches" -- Kelly, Liz, Tammy, Sashi & me -- "we'll get you, our pretties . . . "

"BOO!!"

P.S. -- PUPPIES . . .

P.S. -- Puppies, please do not forget to wear your pajamas, tomorrow, for our spooky storytime, by flashlight, and, under the tent!!!! XOXO.

HALLOWEEN FUN!!!!

Dear Families, Friends and Blog-Followers (!!),

Today was filled with many great opportunities for learning and fun, as photos confirm.

If your Butterflies and Puppies tell you that they colored and played with pasta, they are, indeed, telling the truth!!

Miss Downing and Mrs. Dolham filled a great big aluminum vat with cooked spaghetti and shells and added and mixed food colors into the "Spooky Stew" -- the kids had a fabulous time eating the pasta, making spider webs, and, playing with it, in the sensory table, with and without gloves -- said activities taught science and art and fostered social skills, as well as encouraged sensory experimentation.

As if that was not enough to stimulate their senses, children and adults, alike, wrapped each other up in toilet paper -- ("mummies" or "mommies?") -- when we were finished, we collected the remains and are saving them to mix with water to make "clean mud" -- reduce, reuse and recycle!!!!

Activities also included practicing one to one correspondence, (math), by using foam pumpkin stick puppets and pumpkin seeds and learning to spell Halloween-themed words, (language/literacy), with accompanying pictures, on keyboards.

In addition, Kelly put-up our life-size x-ray, as we told her the names of the bones that we have learned, thus far, and reviewed the list of school rules, which our little friends came up with, yesterday afternoon.

At Circle-Time, Butterflies and Puppies, too, sat on their new circle spots, which they decorated, themselves, and to which Liz added the final touches and laminated.

Mrs. Dolham, again, led the "mystery box" game, reviewed the calendar, and much, much more -- and -- surprise, surprise -- our apple seeds have begun to sprout, thanks to Liz and a good deal of patience!! :)

This week, Kelly added the "big bikes" to our plethora of outdoor riding toys -- thank you!!

We have now read over 85 books, including today's stories -- "Fall Leaves" written by Mary Packard and illustrated by Dana Regan, "Froggy's Halloween" written by Jonathan London and illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz, "Boo" written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko -- (what a pair!!) -- "A Day with Whisker Wickles" written by Cynthia Jameson and illustrated by James Marshall, "There was an Old Monster" by Rebecca, Adrian and Ed Emberly and "Glad Monster, Sad Monster" written by Ed Emberly and illustrated by Anne Miranda -- I took photos of each of the children with his/her favorite monstrous expression, and, among the most popular were "angry", "scary", "silly" and "loving" -- thank you to all of the teachers, Amy, students from both Lexington and Minuteman Career and Technical High Schools, and, the children, themselves, for reading together and to each other!!

We have pumpkins on our front porch, a new shelf for some of our musical technology and new stalls in the bathrooms -- yahoo!!

Tomorrow, while Miss Downing and Mrs. Goell drive the Butterflies to Wilson Farm, in the School Van, (go Kelly!!), Mrs. Dolham and I will be reading more stories, in the dark, as we did, today, to the Puppies, enjoying a special snack -- (everything's orange?!) -- putting together a skeleton puzzle, decorating paper bats, stuffing ghost bags, perhaps getting glittery pumpkin tattoos, and, doing "tons and tons of fun stuff!!", alongside our friends from the LABB Program -- "Congratulations!!", Katelyn, on your graduation -- (yes -- more goodies!!) :)

Lots of Love from Miss Peacock XOXO

NEW BLOG FOLLOWERS!!!!

Thank you to our new Blog Followers -- we are approaching our hoped-for participation rate!!!!

HOLA!!

Dear Families, Friends and "Bloggies",

Our trip to Constance Maynard's Spanish Class was a success -- Ms. Maynard and her students taught us the alphabet and numbers one - ten, complete with songs, how to say our names, and more -- it was great fun!!

We stopped to say "hello!!" to our friends in the Bakery, and then visited the Early Childhood Education classroom, where Mary Ellen Devlin's high school students taught us Halloween music, and, as well, came back, with us, to our School.

And, several high school students from Lexington High assisted the children in making "Gracias!!" cards for Ms. Maynard, prior to heading out.

Thank you to all who were part of a wonderful learning experience!!

Miss Downing read a book about Diego and the Rainforest Animals, brought in by Nyah, during morning meeting, and, now, we are very close to having read the required number of books for the reading challenge -- CONGRATULATIONS, BUTTERFLIES AND PUPPIES!!!!

We now have a "Spooky Farm Stand", resplendant with decorated pumpkins, cobwebs, and more!!

The Butterflies look forward to their excursion to Wilson Farms, tomorrow, with Miss Downing and Mrs. Goell, while Liz and I enjoy pajama time and Halloween-themed books, treats and activities, with the Puppies.

Have another stellar day!!

"OUR FIELDTRIP TO HONEY POT HILL FARMS!!

Good Evening All,

We finally made it to Honey Pot Hill Farms, in beautiful Stow, this morning, and, it was well worth the wait -- we took lots and lots of photos!!!!

"Jack", our bus driver, was very efficient and friendly -- we observed nature, together, including "oreo"-(striped) cows and horses, from afar, and sang songs on our way to the Farm -- with us were Orion's Dad and Molly's Grandmother -- thank you, both, for your enthusiasm and assistance!! :) :)

Once at the Farm, everything went very smoothly, and, aside from our hands being a little bit cold, after picking the apples, we were very comfortable!!

We went for a hayride, with our driver, Mr. Hark, and searched for hidden pumpkins, along the way -- Once at the grove, Martha showed the children how to pick apples without harming next year's crop -- "gently twist and pull" -- the apples were among the largest and tastiest, ever!!

Upon our return from the orchard, we ate "yummalicious" cider doughnuts and drank apple cider -- mmmmmm . . . , and, then, chose our pumpkins.

(Thank you, families, for your patience -- I must wonder if going on this particular fieldtrip, today, was in the master plan, for a truly wonderful time was had by all who attended!!!!)

Please enjoy the week-end, and, the teachers look very forward to seeing you all, beginning on Monday -- the start of another jam-packed week of seasonal learning and fun!!

"APPLE AND PUMPKIN PICKING, TODAY!!!!"

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, after I left School, I believe that everyone made "Grandma's Pumpkin Bread" -- only -- this time -- with real pumpkin that Liz baked!!

We have been reading many, many stories, especially including books that the children, themselves, have brought in to School, with great excitement, I must say!!

On Thursday, Mrs. Dolham read "Sheep in a Shop" written by Nancy Shaw and illustrated by Margot Apple, "Giggle, Giggle, Quack" written by Doreen Cronin with pictures by Betsy Lewin and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs", which Nyah provided, from home, and is now a movie, in 3-D, by Judi and Don Barrett!!

As well, in what is now our "Bookstore", Miss Downing read "The Little House", brought in by Nyah, and, I read "I Want to be a Ballet Dancer" and "The Sweetest Christmas", brought in by Kirsten -- along with many others, as well -- at afternoon Circle, Mrs. Goell read "What's Under My Bed", a beloved classic, by James Stevenson!!

(We have read at least 75 books, at this point!!!!)

After our friends from Lexington High School left, we went outside, with Kelly, and stuffed two scarecrows with leaves!!

We continue to work on literacy and numerical, scientific and art skills via a number of activities prepared for activity time.

We look forward to a wonderful experience at Honey Pot Hill Farms, today!!

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY!!

Dear Friends, (Back Again . . . ),

This has certainly been a surprising week of days, weather-wise -- Monday, we were out in the snow, boots and all, and, Wednesday, we hardly needed jackets?!

This week, we have added several more books, read, to our reading challenge poster -- along with Nyah, Kirsten brought in Scholastic's versions of "You Read To Me and I'll Read To You" and "Snow White". Among the books read by the teachers were "Under the Apple Tree", (Mrs. Dolham), "Go Away, Big Green Monster" (Ed Emberly) and "Pierre" (Maurice Sendak), (Mrs. Goell) and "The Crayon Box That Talked" and "Fat Cat on a Mat", (Miss Peacock).

We have read more of "Bonz", such as a few more jokes, and danced to the "Bony Hokey Pokey", (while learning the meanings of several bones, including the "cranium")!!

We have had many visitors. this week, according to our schedule, including students from Lexington High School and Minuteman Career and Technical High School, on Tuesday, and, our friends from the LABB Program, on Wednesday -- We forever embrace Amy's daily contributions and surprise visits!!

We continue to learn more about our plethora of pumpkins by counting and baking both the seeds and tops, via sensory play and decorating -- the children have utilized their science, math and art skills, in addition to fine motor and language in pumpkin discovery, alone!!!!

On Tuesday, we designed a thank you card for Grotonwood Camp, from where Liz obtained the pumpkins.

Our Classroom is filled with music and dance, as always, and many of our little friends know all of the words to "The October Song"!!

Kelly has spent a great deal of time introducing the "Handwriting Without Tears" Curriculum to the "Butterflies" and "Puppies", especially via the concept and use of "Matman", and, Liz has been successfully teaching counting skills, through a variety of mediums, including the calendar.

Onward and upward!!

"GOOD MORNING!!"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog Followers,

Good Morning!!

Last evening, at Carey Hall, Kelly, Liz and I represented Minuteman's CDC at the Lexfun!! event -- we talked to many parents, to whom we provided the opportunity to view our DVD, curriculum tools and ideas and projects and, as well, passed-out bags of Rainbow Stew, along with its recipe -- our efforts seemed to be well-received!!

Please remember that, on Monday, we will be heading over to "The Big School", for a Spanish Lesson; on Wednesday, the "Butterflies" will be field-tripping over to Wilson Farm, (Liz and I have a special morning planned for the "Puppies"); and, on Friday, we will all be parading throughout Minuteman's High School, trick-or-treating (!!) -- please remember to send your children in with their orange buckets -- thank you!!

and, tomorrow, we go apple and pumpkin picking -- (for real?!) -- a long-awaited adventure for all!!!!

I am very happy to report that I will soon be an Ambassador for author and illustrator, Peter H. Reynolds, which will enable the teachers to spread his message with added resources, such as software, up to date information, discounted purchases, and more!!

Oops -- gotta go -- will be back soon!!

"A SNOWY DAY"

Dear Friends,

We had our first experience of the "winter season" (?!), yesterday, with snow boots, heavier jackets, hats and mittens!! Mrs. Dolham took us on a walk to the Football Field, where we investigated and explored.

(Please remember to keep or send the abovementioned clothing to School, with your children, even at this very early time, in the year -- thank you!!)

Yesterday, we looked at and touched pumpkins, mixed them with ice, in the sensory table, and, decorated said, as well -- thank you, Liz, for the 20 (!!) pumpkins which you brought into School!!

We are planning to toast the seeds, and, discovered that, several of our friends are growing pumpkins, at home -- Kirsten says that hers is now green!!

Nyah shared a book, "Who Said Boo?", by Phyllis Root and Ana Martin Larranaga -- thank you, Nyah -- and -- I started reading "Bonz", filled with songs, games and jokes, by Byron Glaser and Sandra Higashi.

Miss Downing bought bright orange buckets, for "shopping" at the Farm Stand, and trick-or-treating -- thanks, Kelly!! -- and -- we have begun to grow an Amaryllis, as well!!

Our Scholastic Reading Challenge Poster is displayed, in the Classroom, along with a newly decorated seasonal bulletin board, themed "Five Little Pumpkins" -- we have read at least 64 books, out of the 100 required, so far!! WOOHOO!!!!

We will have a new student, Colby, joining us in November -- WELCOME, COLBY!!

We look forward to another learning and fun-filled day, today, at the CDC!!

More Good News about Scholastic Books!!

Happy Sunday, All,

The October Scholastic Book Order is in the mail, and, I have begun the process to order, on-line, effective in November -- by utilizing Scholastic's on-line resources, families will receive additional free books -- yet another means to building a wonderfully tailored and inexpensive home library -- I will keep you posted!!

The CDC is officially registered, on Eli Manning's Team, for the Reading Challenge -- of what I know to have been read, at School, we are close to 60 of the 100 books to be finished by mid-December. When our goal has been met, we will have helped to donate one million books to needy children -- I plan to hang the poster, tracking books, tomorrow.

With our recently earned bonus points, we have been able to order a set of Science Vocabulary Readers, "Stone Soup" and "A Pocketful of Kisses", for our Classroom!!

Thank you, all, for your continued support of ever important Early Literacy Skills!!!!

"IF YOU HAVE APPLES, MAKE APPLE PIE!!"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog-Followers,

(Once, again, I apologize for blogging later, rather than sooner, for Wednesday through Friday . . . )

As you likely know, our Fieldtrip to Honeypot Hill Farms has been re-scheduled for next Friday, and, in light of yesterday's happenings, I would like to say that, although I, too, was sad that we did not go apple and pumpkin picking, I was truly proud to be a part of the Child Development Center's Team . . . Once we realized we were to remain at School, a plan was immediately put into action -- the children were no longer disappointed, and, rather, gleefully engaged in wonderful, themed and seasonal activities, with the anticipation of another adventure, next week.

Kelly and Liz quickly prepared an applie-pie baking activity, in which every child participated, one-on-one, for which Tammy picked-up vanilla ice-cream, on her way in to School, and for which I set-out (interactive) Halloween books, a variety of pumpkin and bat cut-outs and shapes, character stampers, haunted house templates, crayons, etc. -- Miss Sashi, Amy and the High-Schoolers contributed greatly, as well, and, joined in the fun!! (The apple pie and ice-cream were delicious, by the way, and especially so, served with yummy hot chocolate!!)

To reinforce the ongoing theme, I read "Barnyard Hullabaloo", authored by Giles Andreae and illustrated by David Wojtowycz, a series of silly poems about farm animals, after which we mooed, baaed, neighed, meowed, barked, clucked, and more -- and -- as a reward for good listening, the kids were given teeny-tiny coloring books, and, as well, were able to spend plenty of time, outdoors.

On Wednesday, many friends visited, and assisted with, corn painting, pumpkin and ghost decorating, Fall/Autumn word typing, dancing and singing and collage work. Guords were mixed in, with the cornstalks, for additional sensory play and our Learning Centers were appropriately themed.

Kelly taught the Butterflies and Puppies about bus safety, introduced "Matman" and, with the children, acted-out "Under the Apple Tree", by Steve Metzger with pictures by Alessia Girasole.

I read "Hair 'Em, Scare 'Em", a pop-up "misadventure", written by Charles Ogden and illustrated by Rick Carton, and, at an afternoon meeting, used jack-o-lantern stick puppets to encourage our group to be part of the storytelling experience of "Witch's Surpirse Treat!" and "Boo To You Too!", both simple and colorful reads by author Hallie Wein and artist Carolyn Jayne Church.

Kelly baked pumpkin-shaped banana bread treats for snack, this, (SNOWY?!?!), am, and, we all made get-well cards for a little friend that has been out, this week.

Miss Downing read "Night is Coming" by W. Nicola Lisa, Mrs. Dolham and I re-introduced "Matman", and, I read "Haunted Halloween Party" by Matt Mitter and Viviana Garofsky and "Farm Animals" by Joanna Jarc Robinson and Cindy Kiernicki

In the late morning, Our Sophomores, in the Early Childhood Education Program, from Minuteman's Career and Technical High School, prepared and guided our little ones, during activity time, in painting spiders, puppeteering, mummy-wrapping and a ghostly scavenger hunt -- thank you, girls!!

Our more newly-structured Circles and Meetings are going quite well, thanks to Kelly and Liz, and at Rest Time, the quiet is enhanced by and our Little Angels enjoy listening to music and stories on CD and the added comfort of Miss Sashi.

Please know that October's Scholastic Book Order will be placed, this week-end, and, with bonus points earned from September's shipment, we have, already, received new books for our classroom!! The Holiday order forms should be in your mailboxes, on or around Monday, with a due date of November 5, in order to ensure delivery in plenty of time for gift-giving.

Our Reading Challenge Poster is filling-up, quickly, and, as Mrs. Dolham mentioned during a meeting on Wednesday, the children may add the titles of books read at Home, as well as at School -- excellent suggestion!!

We continue to assess bids for playground re-construction, our "Spanish" lesson has been scheduled with Constance Maynard, Minuteman's Spanish, French and Latin teacher, on October 26th, and -- remember -- PICTURES WILL BE TAKEN ON TUESDAY, October 20th!! :) :)

Enjoy the week-end, everyone -- next week "promises" warmer weather . . .

Love Miss Peacock XOXO :) :)

"THE SUN IS NOT SUNNY"

Dear Everyone,

As Dr. Seuss says, ("Cat in the Hat"), children can still have fun when it rains -- although our fieldtrip, to the farm, has been postponed until Thursday, we made the Dr. proud, today!!

After cleaning-up the toys and activities of the early morning , I read David Carter's "Halloween Bugs", to the children -- David's pop-up books are among my favorites, and, said is no exception.

While Kelly engaged the Butterflies in her Circle Center focused gathering, Liz reviewed the calendar and, together, we sang songs and "went bananas" with the Puppies -- Liz made each Puppy a pair of "binoculars", and as she read "In the Small, Small Pond", both written and illustrated by Denise Fleming, encouraged our group to use them in spotting things of interest.

During Activity Time, in tandem with Amy and Minuteman's Sophomores from the "Big School", here with us, this week, we painted our binoculars, which we plan to use outdoors; examined really, really long corn stalks, which now adorn the hallway, thanks to Kelly and Alana (!!); played on farm-themed mats, with toy animals and vehicles; and, explored the many open Learning Centers -- stocked with costumes, now, Dramatic Play continues to be a favorite.

Both Butterflies and Puppies alike really enjoyed playing "teachers", today, in the book area, as Nyah, John, Nicky and Phil took turns describing the fronts, backs and spines of the books, the authors and artists, and "reading" stories to others.

And, of course, everyone was thrilled to see Sprint and Buddy back at School -- the day was thoroughly full of fun and friends!!

Tomorrow, you will notice, next to our Spooky Tree, a witch and a mummy, lavishly decorated at School, today.

We had many laughs at meeting, as I read "Halloween Colors", a turn-the-flap book by Carla Dijs, and "Whose Hat is That", "Halloween Parade" and "Boo! Scram! Happy Halloween" -- three pop-up books by the makers of Sesame Street -- we do love our books and toys, and took a few minutes to play tunes with interactive kitties, a ghost and a chameleon.

We are planning to paint with the corn, retrieved from the stalks, later on this week, and finish-up several more festive projects, as well.

Liz has sent home "leaves" with all of the children, for their families to decorate with photos and other symbols of special memories -- when complete, they will combine to make a large "Family Tree", for all to enjoy -- thank you, Mrs. Dolham!!

And, "yahoo!!" -- our first order of Scholastic books has arrived and been distrubuted, accordingly -- we earned lots of bonus points, already, and several new books for the classroom -- I am hoping to coordinate a "reading challenge", designed by Scholastic, to provide books to children in need -- I think that our little friends will have no problem, whatsoever, reading 100 books by December -- (we have probably read more than said, by now!!) -- I plan to keep you all informed of our progress, by tracking what we read, on a wall chart -- thank you, to all participating families, for your continued support!!

"WELCOME HOME, SPRINT AND BUDDY!!"

Dear Friends, Families and Blog Followers,

Yes -- it is true -- our infamous pair of turtles, Sprint and Buddy, will be coming home, to our new CDC, shortly -- we have so missed our amphibious friends!!

And -- we move further and further along into well-structured days, which include the patience and calm of our Post Grad, Amy, as well as scheduled visits from high-school students from both Minuteman's Career and Technical High School and Lexington High School.

"Fieldtripping" -- (please do not forget -- we pick pumpkins and apples and eat cider doughnuts on Tuesday!!) -- is in full swing!!

While Liz and I are using a calendar, now, with the "Puppies" -- (thank you, Liz!!) -- with the "Butterflies", Kelly has re-introduced the Circle Center, and is reinforcing letter and number recognition, letter sounds, one-to-one correspondence, rhyming words, colors, shapes, weather, and, much more -- additionally, I recently purchased color-mixing charts which will back-up learning, with fun, during meetings.

On Friday, the children enjoyed a wonderful mix of activities, such as keyboarding Fall and Autumn-themed words, shaping our pumpkiny, home-made play-dough, making "spider webs", completing "The Royal Family" and our multi-media group collages, (which fosters teamwork, sensory stimulation and fine motor-skill development), doing puzzles and playing in the many learning centers.

A high-light was, indeed, the huge, stand-up "Jack-O-Lantern" bean bag toss game, for outdoor use, built for the CDC, by our friends in Carpentry!! Thank you, Amy, for your undaunted assistance -- everyone "made their marks" by "signing" a thank you card for the High-Schoolers in said Shop -- our valued resources continue to be a great asset to our Center, and, the enthusiasm that the Shop Teachers and their Students have shown truly speak to the uniqueness of the Program.

And, snacks and lunches brought over from the "Big School" are being well-received!!

Two favorite interactive songs that Liz often sings during Circle-Time, which surely get the kids moving, are "Jump Up and Down!!" and "Turn Around!!" -- I re-read "The Dot", written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, and, as I was heading-out the door, on Friday afternoon, Liz was surrounded by our group of story-loving little friends.

Please note that, although our first order has yet to arrive, it is on its way, and, more Scholastic offerings are in your mailboxes, along with Unicef collection boxes for Halloween and Pumpkin Hill's directions for growing really, really big pumpkins and toasting pumpkin seeds!!

For those of you with children in Lexington's Public School System, please know that contributions are being accepted, at said schools, for our beloved troops -- participation in the "FLAGS" program offers youngsters credit for community service -- and -- a local dentist is offering to buy back Halloween candy, to, as well, be sent to the people stationed overseas.

If anyone has any questions about Scholastic book ordering, Unicef collections, "FLAGS" and/or the candy buy-back, please see me -- thank you!!!!

We continue to decorate for and enjoy the season!!

Love Miss Peacock, (Maria), always on behalf of Miss Downing, (Kelly), Mrs. Dolham, (Liz), Mrs. Goell, (Tammy) and (Miss) Sashi XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO.

TRICKS AND TREATS!!

Dear Families and Friends,

Good evening!!

The past couple of days have brought, with them, great anticipation of and enthusiasm for the fun to be had in October -- we have been talking about and preparing for fieldtrips and trick-or-treating!!

Both Kelly and Liz have been teaching the children about the season via apple-themed songs, games and exploration.

Wednesday, the kids looked at apples from the outside to the inside, marveling at the patterns of "stars" in their middles, counted and began rooting the seeds and engaged in stamping and printing with the halved and quartered fruits -- they have eaten them, as well, and do plan to make applesauce and/or pie, in the near future!!

As a result, our Butterflies and Puppies have explored apples from scientific, mathematical and artistic perspectives.

We finished decorating our "Halloween Tree", which you may already have noticed, as it is covered with even more orange, black and white crepe paper, cobwebs and large rubber bugs -- yuck!! :) !!

We have almost completed our Jack-O-Lanterns, which will be displayed on a bulletin board, in the main classroom, and have read a wide variety of October-inspired stories, such as "Black Cat Creeping", "Goodnight Goon", (a spooky take on the original, by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd), "Pumpkin Cat" and "Vunce Upon a Time", (a very entertaining tale of Dagmar, a young vampire, who is a vegetarian, eats candy and is as scared of humans as they are of vampires)!!

Soon, Kelly will finish "The Royal Family", with our little ones, so that it may be available to peruse.

We all have been thoroughly enjoying music and movement and newly-devised activities, including the use of a calendar, during separate circles and meetings, and, today, made perfectly-colored pumpkin-spice play-dough, shaped into pumpkins, bats, ghosts, witches and more, as well as, immersed very sappy pine-cones in tubs of water, to discover, later on, that the "petals" closed!!

Lots of outdoor play has exposed us to sun, rain, wind and a myriad of fall colors -- it is wonderful to have real yardspace.

The CDC has had many visitors, lately, including Amy, our friends from LABB and, today, some seniors from Lexington High School.

With Tammy in California, for a few days, Nyah, with the assistance of Kirsten, has taken on the responsibility of narrating "Caps for Sale", just before rest time -- thank you, girls!!

Do have a wonderful night, all, and we look very forward to seeing you in the morning!!

Love Miss Peacock XOXO :) :)

"Now, Where Was I?"

. . . Oh, yes -- more about yesterday, (Monday), -- I walked into a morning already in full swing, with Mrs. Dolham and the children parading around with large, colorful game pieces on their heads, singing "The Wheels On The Bus" -- all I could do was laugh, and, be reminded of why I love my work!!

Mrs. Dolham, as well, read, "The Grumpy Morning", a story about cranky farm animals made joyous by their farmer, written by Pamela Duncan Edwards and illustrated by Darcia Labrosse, and, "The Spotty Pig", a story about a pig who learned to appreciate the wonders of being different, written by Dick King Smith and illustrated by Mary Wormell.

I will be working, as follows:

M - TH 09:00 - 01:00
F 09:00 - 12:45

This morning, I arrived to the aroma of freshly-baked banana mini muffins.

We were fortunate to have Amy, with us, today, a post-graduate in Early Childhood Education, at the Minuteman Career and Technical High School, who will continue to join us every day, -- thank you, Amy!!

Shortly after Kelly had her first Circle of Butterflies and Liz and I had our first Circle of Puppies, we ventured outside to explore nature, once again -- Liz spent quite a bit of time reading and talking about the beginning of Fall, (Autumn).

(Today was the first day that we began having regularly scheduled meetings and separate circles -- woohoo!!)

We collected all kinds of leaves and other bits and pieces of nature, (no picking or plucking!!), and, later, during activity time, made beautiful multi-media collages, in small groups, and, examined our findings with magnifying glasses.

We toted each other around, in our wagons, (thank you, families), and decorated a shelter/box with crayons -- what lovely weather, indeed!!

In addition, during activity time, we continued decorating for Halloween, played with Legos and engaged in dramatic play -- we even made a card to send over to "the big school" -- to thank our friends, in Cosmetology, for their hospitality.

After lunch, I read what has now become a "new old favorite", The Scary Show of Mo and Jo", by Hanoch Piven, and, "the Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert -- the children surely love their stories, and, often, head over to the Book Area, to "read" -- a beautiful sight!!

A very special thank you to Daphne, Ellie's Nanna, who made berets for all of the teachers -- how thoughtful and generous -- and toasty -- thank you, so very much -- a group photo is certainly in order!!!!

Tomorrow, we look very forward to seeing both Amy, again, and, our LABB students, and adding more and more touches of "Autumn" to our classroom!!

Love Miss Peacock XOXO

OUR DAY AT THE "BIG SCHOOL"!!!!

Good Morning, Friends,

I understand that Friday was another full day at our Center!! :)

And, yes, we looked like we were all "going on a bear hunt", yesterday morning, as we walked and wagoned our way beyond the football field, into our high school, and up the stairs to Cosmetology, where the kids were scheduled to have their hair washed, dried and styled!! and, oh, the pictures!!!! Some of the children chose to engage in activities that we brought over, with us, "just in case" . . . Many of us visited Ms. Devlin and our big high school friends, and, all of us spent some time in the library, (where we have our very own section of books!!), and, then, at the bakery, (which was beautifully decorated for Halloween!!), before we headed back to Mill St.

Many, many thanks to Cindy DeMaio, her staff and students!!!!

To our complete delight, our little friend, Noy, who is now in kindergarten, is joining us on Mondays!!!!

Our first day of "school lunches" went relatively smoothly, and, all of the children seemed very happy with their pasta.

Oh my -- I must be off -- I'll write more, later!!

CHILLY OCTOBER DAYS

Dear Friends, Families and Bloggers,

Well, once October hit, so did the fall weather -- it has been a couple of cold days, indeed!!

This began my first week of working Monday - Thursday -- yet another transition -- I will have to get the "scoop", on today, Monday morning . . .

On Thursday, however, we continued to delve into autumn -- Liz began teaching our children "The October Song" and "Jump Up and Down", along with a myriad of other songs and games, and, she discussed, with them, the concept of "the harvest", in preparation for the months to come.

You may have noticed, as well, that most of the kids had new hairstyles upon pick-up -- some of the girls had french braids, while quite a few of the boys donned pony-tails, straight-up, on which they insisted stay, indefinitely -- we have a few photos, of course -- thank you, Mrs. Dolham!!

I read "If You Give A Cat A Cupcake", the latest in the series written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond -- for those of you that possess a special fondness for said stories, you may like to know that the hardcovers and accompanying stuffed companions are being sold at Kohl's, for $5 each, with almost 100% of the proceeds going to charity -- it is not only a great way to build the collection at an exceptionally reasonable price, but also to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate children.

The Halloween themed version of "I Spy" was popular, as well, during activity time, and, just before rest time, Mrs. Goell, and the little ones, too, performed another lively re-creation of "Caps for Sale".

Speaking of books . . . please know that the Scholastic book order should be arriving in less than two weeks, in plenty of time for trick or treating, and that new forms should be in your mailboxes, very soon, so that you may purchase specialty books well before the holidays are in full swing -- we thank you for your support!!

We continue to decorate our big Jack-O-Lantern shapes for display -- a work in progress -- some of the happy pumpkins are so covered with leaves, colorful tape and a variety of textured stickers, and more, that there is hardly any orange left to see -- they are quite extra-ordinary!!

In keeping with the spirit of the season, we have begun to adorn our "Tree" for both the Red Sox and Halloween, using orange and black crepe paper, "cobwebs", hand-made ornaments and photographs of players -- however, we have only just begun!!

As well, the Butterflies and Puppies, alike, polished-up their red paper apples, which were then added to the family-inspired bulletin board, played in the many learning centers -- dramatic play is an especially popular area -- and spent quite a bit of time, outdoors, in quite an invigorating temperature.

Our new "Abstract Art Gallery" is located, across from the entryway, in the front lobby, while our "Spotted, Dotted Butterfly" is attached to a wall in the main classroom.

Two of our friends from the maintenance crew worked on improving the functioning of our doors and gates -- thank you!!

Please enjoy this week-end, and, we look very forward to seeing you all, for the beginning of a new learning and fun-filled week, at the CDC!!
